Dorothy M. Wahl

Dorothy Wahl (nee Schmidt) of Cherry Hill passed away on April 15, 2025 at the age of 95. Beloved wife of the late Martin Wahl Jr. Beloved mother of late June L. Fitzgerald. Loving grandmother of the late Kerri (Scott) Butler of Brick NJ, Brian (Dot) Fitzgerald of Cherry Hill NJ and Kristi (Jim) McLaughlin of Haddon Heights NJ. Great grandmother of Scott, Karli, Zachary, Caden and the late John. And the sister of Eleanor Bean. She was also the loving partner of the late Nick DiGrosso. Dorothy was the daughter of the late Adolph and Ida (nee Kenas) Schmidt. She was born in Philadelphia and was a lifelong resident of Cherry Hill NJ. Dorothy lived her life according to her values of family, service and community. She didn’t just say those things were important, she demonstrated that they were important. If she joined or volunteered for your organization, you could count on Dorothy and her family for anything you needed. Dorothy was always the first to offer help and often before she was even asked. Dorothy may have only had her daughter June, but she was grandmother to 3, great grandmother to 4, a cousin to many and “Aunt Dot” to dozens of nieces and nephews. She was thrilled to be able to add Nick’s kids and grandkids and other family when they met later in life. She loved to host her family and friends, hosting countless birthdays and holidays and special events at her beautiful home. Her annual Memorial Day Picnics and Christmas Eve open houses often included over 100 people. Her door was always open to visitors and she always had a cake on hand and could whip up a meal in what seemed like minutes. Dorothy loved to visit or call and check up on her cousins, nieces and nephews and friends and always remembered birthdays and important events with a card or phone call. She would sit at the table for hours with her phonebook making phone calls and making sure she always knew what was happening in everyone’s lives. And ended almost every call with “Well I’m here, so please stop in anytime!” And she meant it. In a time when people often don’t want to “intrude”, Dorothy never hesitated to just show up for a visit or to lend a hand. Dorothy was always the working woman and took pride in her professional accomplishments. She started with Haddonfield Tool and Dye company and eventually took a job with the Camden County Judicial offices in Camden where she worked well into her 70s as an Executive Admin to several judges. Dorothy dedicated so much of her time to community and service. When her daughter joined the Royaleers Drum and Bugle Corp she immediately volunteered to be a chaperone, cook, seamstress and any other role that needed to be filled. She spent her summers in hot gyms and on hot busses taking the girls to parades and competitions. She did whatever needed to be done to help those young girls be successful. Dorothy was a life-long member of the Cherry Hill American Legion Post 372 Women’s Auxiliary. She held almost every position with Auxiliary and chaired committees and hosted fundraisers, service projects, holiday parties and meals.She always made sure to include her grandchildren so that they learned the importance of patriotism and community. The American Legion members were always considered family and friends. Relatives and friends are invited to Dorothy’s memorial service on Friday, April 25 starting 10am at Christ the King Church, 200 Windsor Ave., Haddonfield NJ followed by her funeral Mass 11am.
