Philip Francis McDermott

Philip Francis McDermott, of Cinnaminson, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2017 at the age of 83. Philip was the beloved husband of Marilyn (nee Shea) for 43 years. Loving father of Philip F.X. McDermott and his wife Gody. Dear Pop Pop to Aiden, Ava, and Aislyn. Loving brother of Patrick and Rosemary. Philip was born on May 11th, 1933 in Brooklyn, NY. He graduated from both St. Johns University and Detroit University. He served as a Xaverian Brother for 16 years, teaching and coaching at both Flaget High School in Louisville, Kentucky (where they won multiple football state championships during his tenure), and Nazareth High School, Brooklyn, New York. After teaching, Philip became a Treasury Agent with the Internal Security Division, where he served for twenty years in both New York City and Philadelphia. During his career with the Treasury, Phil participated and supervised major investigations in both venues. In his post Treasury years, Phil continued providing investigative services for both the Federal Bureau of Investigations and the National Football League. Philip served his community in so many capacities over the years: he was a teacher, a coach, a mentor, and a friend. He meant much to his family, friends, and co-workers alike. He will be remembered on many golf courses throughout the northeast for his successes and his follies. His love of nature will always be recalled, and his greatest legacy will be the kindness he shared with all whom he encountered. But nothing was more important to Phil than being a devoted husband to his wife, Marilyn, whom he married in New York City in September of 1974, and a father to his son, Philip F.X. McDermott. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Philip’s life celebration gathering at Givnish of Cinnaminson, 1200 Route 130 N., on Sunday evening from 6 – 8 pm, and Monday morning from 9 – 10 am. His funeral Mass will follow at 10:30 am at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 2500 Branch Pike, Cinnaminson. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Philip’s memory may be made to Samaritan Hospice, 5 Eves Dr. Suite 300, Marlton, NJ 08053.
