No words can describe the emptiness we all feel at this time of loss and our hearts go out to Colleen, Sarah, and David, Jr., his mother, and brothers. Dave, Sr., was "one of a kind" and everyone at work considered him not only a hard working colleague but more importantly a trusted friend.
Dave was a dedicated Chief Engineer and there were many occasions during the 8+ years that we worked together where situations didn't look good. Whether it be a fire, an electrical or plumbing problem, HVAC, or countless issues that all seem trivial now--all Dave had to say to me was "we'll take care of it"--and that's exactly what he did. We worked collectively and as a team and we could always count on each other but it was largely his hard work and dedication that really got us to the finish line. His first concern was always the people and tenants at 2000 Market and how best to "fix" the problem. We did not always agree on the approach but our styles and personalities really "clicked" and complimented each other and there are many success stories a result.
Most recently we closed 5 square blocks in center city on a Sunday morning for a helicopter lift and watched with amazement how the old/new towers were removed/delivered to the building. Dave was such a big part of project as he was with so many others and I know he was really looking forward to starting up those new towers. Well dammit Dave, those towers are going to be started up and we need you to look down and make sure they're running right, and we need you too keep an eye on us too!
Other than a couple of times a year when we would get together at the Jug Handle Inn for some wings & beers, we had little interaction outside of work. Although there were many a calls for problem at the building in the middle of the night, this was when Dave could spend time with his family (and his dogs) and enjoy the rewards of his hard work. He deserved every minute of that time.
He always looked forward to his annual trips to the Caribbean during the winter months. One week was good enough and he was always "pumped up" before the trip. A couple of weeks before his trip, Renae and I went to Aruba and he was adamant that I return with a tan. The first thing he said to me when I walked through the doors of 2000 (for the helicopter lift) was "you listened to me and got some color...", and I said, "of course that's what you said to do...".
My friend Dave, I will forever cherish our hand shake the day before you left for vacation, said a few words in my (limited) Spanish vocabulary--good day, Cerveza, etc., and wished you a great trip. Little did we know that it would be our last hand shake on God's green earth. I know you will have everything "fixed" in heaven and we will meet again in paradise. Please watch over us and especially your family and know we are there for them.
Until we meet again...you wave to me and I wave back. I'll miss you and will never forget you my friend. Peace brother!
Jim
