Dear Kern Family, and to Donna and Pat my childhood girl friends next door...
I am so sorry for the loss of your mother. My thoughts and wishes are with your family.
The last time I visited with your folks was when my dad was ill in Princeton nearly 20 years ago. After a particularly hard night at the hospital with him, that morning like a homing pigeon, I took his car and headed west till I hit the river, then south till I hit our old town and neighborhood. I was seeking the comfort and solace your mom offered me so many times before as a kid long ago. I was greeted at the door with a surprised "my little Mary"...., both their warm welcoming smiles and hugs, followed by an enthusiastic "come in, come in". Further inviting me into the warmth of her kitchen, she cooked me a meal, fed me and a offered her shoulder as I knew she would. That visit, she gave me the courage and strength to face what was yet to come in my dad's remaining days. This after almost 25 years a stranger, having moved away to the west. Well, she was quite memorable, my adopted next door mom.
Your mother, having payed it forward in so many incremental and important ways, so that in your hour...you can be comforted in the ways she so warmly offered to others...in fond memories retold to celebrate her life.
Many blessings to you and yours as you send her homeward,
Mary Petrilla,
