Berthram Needelman's Obituary
NEEDELMAN
Bert passed away early the morning of March 8, 2013, at age 83. A Professor of Social Psychology over many years at the State University of Oswego, with a particular interest in social norms across cultures and in criminal behavior. He was an artist as well - creating striking images throughout his life with pen, paint and computer, many with a slant of social criticism. He was a passionate and private man who brought a true intellectual curiosity to the world, ranging far and wide almost without limit. But for Bert, it was not enough to explore issues around the fringes ? he sought always a deep understanding, plumbing into the most subtle of nuances. He was a voracious reader, reading widely and incessantly, and a lover of classical music of all sorts. An abiding passion for the downtrodden made him a harsh critic of American economics and politics. He was a graduate of Temple University, earning several degrees from the school. Bert had worked for 8 years for the City of Philadelphia, before setting upon a career change, which led to his Ph.D. in Sociology.
Bert was predeceased by his parents, Benjamin and Sadie Needelman and by his brothers, Alex, George and Samuel Needelman. Bert leaves his wife of 28 years, Cecelia Vining, and his step sons, Thomas, Paul and Willard Zenaty.
Arrangements for a memorial service will be announced at a later date. Contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Burlington County Library System, 5 Pioneer Boulevard, Westampton, NJ 08060; website: www.bcls.lib.nj.us/support.
