Bessie Hartz's Obituary
Bessie Hartz, 95, of Whiting, NJ, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2024.
Born on May 30, 1929, in Centerville, OH, Bessie was the beloved daughter of the late George and Helen Carroll. She was a devoted wife to her late husband, Calvin Hartz.
Bess is survived by her loving children: Judy Cherry (Kurt), Ken Hartz, and the late Jeanne Goddard (Jeff). She was a cherished grandmother to Laura Reyes (Marcos), Jeremy Goddard, Jacob Cherry (Corrine), Bradley Cherry, Alex Hartz, Gabrielle Foerter (Jacob), and Emmeline Pedersen (Drew). She was also a great-grandmother to Elena, Gian Marco, Tulio, Evan, Riley, Levi, Collin, Mason, Leo, Cameron, and Hayden. Also surviving are sisters Harriet Geren, Betty Lou Francis, and Mary Wood and she is predeceased by her brother John Carroll and sister Isabel Case. Bess had a strong work ethic from a young age helping in the family dairy business with the milk delivery with her brother and father. She later moved to New Jersey where she dedicated herself to raising her three children. As a founding member of Shadyrest Bible Church, she was deeply involved in the church since its inception in 1948. Bess spent over 50 years teaching Sunday School to 4 and 5-year-olds and sang in the Ladies Trio and choir since her teenage years. She enjoyed cooking and entertaining family and friends and loved to grow flowers.
Bess will be lovingly remembered for her deep commitment to her family and her unwavering love for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in addition to all the children she taught in Sunday School over those fifty years.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on September 20, 2024 at Fellowship CrossPoint Church, 187 Crosswicks Chesterfield Rd, Chesterfield, NJ 08515, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM, with a funeral service beginning at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at the Brigadier General Wm. C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bess’s memory may be made to Fellowship CrossPoint Church Building Fund.
