Charles was my first cousin and we always called him “Sonny”. My earliest remembrance of him was when he saved my life at 5 years of age. We were at a picnic at Strawbridge Lake and my brother accidentally knocked me off the bank without realizing it. Sonny, age 8 at the time, noticed me flailing around in the lake and said loudly, “ I didn’t know that Lainy could do the backstroke?” At that, a woman sunbathing nearby dove into the lake and saved me from drowning. If Sonny hadn’t noticed, I wouldn’t be here today. Sonny also was very generous by taking us McCrink kids to the shore, boardwalk and bowling. He was a “fun” cousin that was always loved and will always be remembered with love.
