Don H. Cook's Obituary
Don H. Cook passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 1, 2018 surrounded by his family. Born in Pittsburgh, Pa on November 12, 1928 to his parents Harvey and Clara Cook , Don was just a few months shy of reaching that 90 year old milestone. Having lived in Pittsburgh and Maryland, Don and his family moved to Moorestown, NJ where he has been a resident since 1969.
Don’s favorite activities were centered around his family and those extended family gatherings that took place in his backyard and pool and celebrating the various milestones and achievements of his children and grandchildren. Many family memories were made at the family’s beach house on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland where Don would be the first one up making breakfast or collecting shells and sharks teeth on the beach.
Don was the beloved husband of the late Mary E. Cook and the loving father of Robert (Carolanne) Cook, John S. Cook, Cathy Cook, James Cook, and William (Beth) Cook. He was predeceased by his daughters Louann Cook and Terry Cook. He was the proud grandfather of Allison, Zoha, Megan, Brian and Madison Cook and great grandfather of Stephanie Brown. Don was the brother of Shirley Simon and the late Nancy Schantz .
As a member of that greatest generation and a WWII Veteran, Don proudly served his country as a PFC in the US Army during WWII stationed in Japan from Sept 16 1946 to Feb 9 1948. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal for his military service. Don was an active parishioner at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Community in Cinnaminson NJ for 50 years. He was a maven at playing bridge and enjoyed spending his recent years at the Moorestown Community Center participating in their bridge and card game tournaments.
As a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering and Master’s degree in Computer Science, Don held a wide number of careers including being employed as a Systems Engineer and Computer Scientist at RCA in Moorestown NJ , Computer Science Corporation in Moorestown, NJ, as well Aydin Corporation in Horsham, PA working on military and commercial defense projects worldwide.
A gathering of family and friends will be held to honor Don’s memory at Givnish Funeral Home located at 1200 Route 130 North in Cinnaminson NJ. The viewings will take place on Thursday evening - August 9th from 7-9 pm and on Friday morning, August 10th from 9:30 – 10:30 am at Givnish Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow 11 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Cinnaminson, NJ. Interment will take place at NJ Veterans Cemetery, Wrightstown, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Don’s honor to benefit St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 2226 Riverton, Rd. Cinnaminson, NJ 08077.
