Dorothy P. Mullen's Obituary
Dorothy Anne (nee Prete) Mullen, 97, of Burlington Township, New Jersey, formerly of Northeast Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2025.
Born January 10, 1928, in Philadelphia to the late Pasquale and Emelia (nee Piscane) Prete, Dorothy was the beloved youngest of seven children. She was preceded in death by her siblings Louis, Gilda, Lillian, Nancy, Dominick, and Michael, and her devoted husband of 58 years, Frederick Mullen, who passed in 2018.
As the youngest in her family, Dorothy developed a strong, distinctive voice that would serve her throughout her remarkable life. She excelled at John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls' High School, graduating in 1944, where she proudly performed in a French play and learned to speak the language at a young age. Her involvement in the Catholic Church remained a cornerstone of her life, and it was at a Catholic organization called the Cags Halloween costume party where she met the love of her life, Frederick Mullen. They married on October 3, 1959, at Annunciation B.V.M. Catholic Church and shared nearly six decades of loving marriage, enjoying early bird dinners at local restaurants and attending Mass together at Christ the King Church in Philadelphia.
Dorothy and Fred welcomed three daughters who were the light of their lives, Dorothy (Kevin) Musgreave, Marlene (Rusty) Mullen-Clayton, and Janice (John) Mullen-Boyle. As a mother, Dorothy created a warm, welcoming home filled with love and laughter. Her daughters fondly remember helping in the kitchen, wearing hair caps while preparing for her legendary family gatherings, and polishing silver the night before her elaborate themed parties with personalized menus. The family treasured their summers at their North Wildwood home, where Dorothy spent nearly 40 years enjoying the sun on the pool deck at the 1900—her true happy place. They also took family trips to visit relatives in Florida to create many cherished memories.
Dorothy's greatest joy came from her eight grandchildren, Steven (deceased), Elizabeth, Robert, Russell (Jenny), Patrick (Meghan), Rachel, Grace, and Jack. She was a master at bringing the family together, coordinating themed celebrations and creating unforgettable experiences. Her culinary talents were legendary—from her homemade crabs and spaghetti to elegant desserts like Crème de Menthe and Peach Melba.
Throughout her life, Dorothy channeled her strong voice and compassionate heart into meaningful service. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels, served as a lector at Mass, and coached public speaking at Nazareth Academy Grade school. Professionally, she worked at the Northeast Times Newspaper and was an active member of the Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, where she broke new ground as the first woman president. She spent 23 years at Liberty Bell Racetrack before finding her true calling as an events coordinator with various Philadelphia hotels, where her natural charisma and organizational skills flourished.
Even in her later years at Granville Assisted Living in Burlington County, Dorothy continued to make new friends and coordinate events, never losing her zest for bringing people together. She embraced life fully, trying new experiences and spending time with friends in the sunshine.
Dorothy will be deeply missed by all who knew her for her charismatic personality, kind heart, and generous spirit. Her legacy lives on through the loving family she raised and the countless lives she touched through her service and friendship.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Dorothy's viewing on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at Corpus Christi Church, 11 S. Sunset Road, Willingboro, NJ 08046, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM. Interment will follow at Lakeview Memorial Park, where Dorothy will be reunited with her beloved Frederick.
