Edward J McDevitt's Obituary
Edward J. McDevitt
June 28, 1936 – May 25, 2025
Edward J. McDevitt passed away on May 25, 2025, at the age of 88. Born in Philadelphia on June 28, 1936, Ed was the son of Charles McDevitt and Mary Helen (Kaufold) and was raised in the tight-knit Port Richmond neighborhood—a place he carried in his heart his whole life.
He was the beloved husband of the late Margaret McDevitt (nee O’Sullivan), who passed away 34 years ago. Together they built a beautiful life and raised three children: Edward McDevitt, Daniel McDevitt (Michelle), and M. Patricia McDevitt. He was a proud and deeply involved Grandpop to Daniel (Jessica), Anthony (Alexandra), Christine (Brandon), Neil, Finn, and the late Kevin. He also cherished his role as Great-Grandpop to Madalynne, Layla, Coral, Shea, Charlotte, Anthony, Riley, Margaret, Abigail, and Brandon.
Ed was one of five brothers, and is survived by John and James. He was predeceased by Charles and Joseph.
A Navy veteran who served from 1954-1958, Ed took great pride in his military service and often spoke of those years with reverence. He was a lifelong Phillies fan and famously loved to hate the Eagles. He was stubborn, yes—but also loyal, generous, funny, and incredibly social. He never missed one of his grandchildren’s games and always had a story ready to share, whether you asked for one or not.
Ed was a dancer in his younger days and an avid reader throughout his life. He had a sharp wit, a big heart, and a way of making everyone feel like family.
Family and friends are invited to a gathering on Thursday June 5, 2025, from 9:30 to 10:30 AM at Givnish of Marlton, 398 E. Main Street, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM at St. Joan of Arc Church. Burial will take place the following day at Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery, Springfield, PA.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Ed’s name may be made to the Delaware Valley Veterans’ Home in honor of his service. https://www.pa.gov/dmva/donate/
