Edward John Tinney Jr.'s Obituary
Edward J. Tinney Jr. of Delran, NJ, was called home to God and joined his beloved wife, Dorothy, in heaven at the age of 83 on June 21, 2022 with his family by his side. Edward was the youngest of two children born on January 16th, 1939 in Philadelphia, PA, to the late Edward J. Tinney, Sr. and Mary Gertrude Tinney. Edward was predeceased by his older sister Marie C. Callahan.
Edward graduated from St. Thomas Moore High School in 1956. He completed a B.S. Degree from Saint Joseph’s University in 1960 where he began his strong bond with the Jesuit community. After college graduation, he served in the United States Army from 1960-1963 and continued in the reserves for three additional years. Edward was stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky where he taught English grammar. Edward had a lifelong love of teaching and helping others which led him to obtain his teaching certification at Saint Joseph’s University in 1963.
Edward taught at West Catholic High School, Willingboro and Delaware County Elementary Schools. He taught his final 35 years at Cherry Hill New Jersey Department of Education. Edward completed two Master’s Degrees at Temple, in Reading and Educational Administration. He attended Temple in the evening while teaching and raising his family. In addition to his time in the classroom as a Reading Skills Specialist, he had a life-long love for tutoring, preparing teens for the SAT tests, teaching speed reading and headed the Cherry Hill Adult GED Program. He always felt helping others to read was the foundation for a well-rounded education and success in life.
Edward was the devoted husband of the late Dorothy Gabriella Tinney (nee Gerety) for 59 years, before her passing in October 2021. Edward would never let a moment pass without the chance to always take care of his “Dottie”. Together they shared a blessed life honoring their faith in God and celebrating their deep love for family.
You could always find Edward taking good care of his home and neighbors on Westover Drive. He enjoyed countless hours in his yard, tinkering on house projects and cars. Edward was a dedicated parishioner of Holy Name Church with Dottie for many years serving as an Usher and CCD religious education teacher. He was a proud graduate of Saint Joseph’s University and you could always hear him cheering “The Hawk Will Never Die” during college basketball season. He valued his Jesuit education and modeled all aspects of his life and teachings based on the Jesuit’s principles.
Edward was the beloved father of Constance A. Lees (David E.) and Colleen M. Tobin (the late Patrick). Edward was the cherished “Pop Pop” to his six grandchildren, Connor, Kaitlyn, and Brady Lees; and Madelyn, Charlotte, and Elizabeth Tobin. Edward’s grandchildren filled his heart with pride and he treasured every moment together. “Pop Pop” never missed a chance to share a favorite book, a silver dollar for their piggy bank and a chance to enjoy a Tastykake treat.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather at Givnish of Cinnaminson, 1200 Route 130 N., on Wednesday, June 29th, from 9 am to 10:15 am.
