Eugene R. Updyke Sr.'s Obituary
Eugene R. Updyke, Sr., who served in the US Navy and was a 20-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department, passed away on April 8, 2022 at the age of 76. A resident of Mt Laurel, NJ, Gene was born in Philadelphia on August 25, 1945, to George Updyke and Alice Updyke (nee Lyczak). He was a loving husband to Cathy Updyke (nee Ferry) for 56 years, and beloved father to Michael (Irene), Terry Armandi (Chris), and Gene Jr. (Marisa), as well as cherished Pop-Pop to Becca, Isabel, Samantha, Ella, Carrie, Cierra, Patric, Tyler, and great granddaughter Dakota.
As a Philadelphia Police officer, he proudly spent 15 years in the K9 unit with his trusted four-legged partners Moe and Satan, with whom he also served as a valuable member of the Bomb Squad at Philadelphia International Airport, where he protected presidents, foreign dignitaries, Pope John Paul II, and even his favorite singer, Elvis Presley.
A viewing will be held on Wednesday, April 13 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Givnish Funeral Home, located at 398 Main Street in Marlton, NJ. Following the viewing, a funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, located at 42 West Main Street in Moorestown, NJ. Interment will be private.
