George S Brookover Jr's Obituary
George S. Brookover Jr., a retired federal government employee and county probation officer, devoted husband, caring father and doting grandfather, passed into eternal life Thursday Oct. 20 surrounded by family members in his Delanco home. He was 82.
Mr. Brookover was born in Delaware County, Pa. in 1934 and graduated from Upper Darby High School in 1951. After four years as a business major at Penn State and 2 ½ years in the Navy, he met Joyce, his wife of 57 years, while working at Kresge’s 5 & 10 in Upper Darby. The couple married in June 1959 and moved to South Jersey a year later, starting a family in Willingboro during the halcyon days of that Abraham Levitt community. He later moved his family to Delanco, where he enjoyed the serene views of ships passing along the Delaware River.
The majority of Mr. Brookover’s life was spent working for the federal government. He was first employed by the Food and Drug Administration at the U.S. Custom House on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia and later moved to the United States Department of Agriculture in New York City and Robbinsville, N.J. After retiring from the federal government, Mr. Brookover worked as a probation officer in Mount Holly. His final job suited him best because he had a kind and gentle demeanor, and an immense compassion for people even when they were in serious trouble.
A member of the Presbyterian churches in Willingboro and Delanco, Mr. Brookover served as a deacon at each. His passions included playing the stock market, trips to the local racetracks – “I’ve got a system,” he’d say – and casinos, eating at local diners with his wife, kids and grandkids and watching Penn State football, the Phillies and the Eagles. He was always sure the Phillies were "making their move" even when they were 25 games out of first place.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Brookover is survived by his three children: David (wife Donna), Robert (wife Francine) and Susan Danner (husband Paul) and his seven grandchildren (Justine, David, Ryan, Dana, Danielle, Ashlee and Nicholas.)
