George H. Dickman's Obituary
George Harry Dickman, age 96, died on Sunday, June 11, 2017. He was born in Maple Shade and remained a lifelong resident. He was married to June (Lloyd) Dickman for 71 years. He was the son of the late John and Anna (Wiedfeld) Dickman. George graduated from Moorestown High School in 1938.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served overseas in the European Theatre where he participated in the D Day invasion in 1944 during World War II where he attained the rank of Level 4 Technical Sergeant with the 92nd Ordinance Medium Maintenance Company. After the war he went to work as an electrician with Stites Electric in Westville, NJ. In 1948 George and his partner, Bob Hansen, founded Dickman and Hansen Electrical Contractors in Maple Shade. George and his partner grew that business successfully for 41 years until selling it to retire in 1989. George was very active in the community. He was a member of the Maple Shade Lions Club for many years during which he served as president for a period of time, he was a member of the Maple Shade Board of Education from 1965 to 1973 serving as president from 1970 – 1973. He was active in the National Association of Electrical Contractors, serving on various boards. He was a member of Maple Shade American Legion and a member of the Maple Shade Masonic Lodge. George was a lifetime member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Maple Shade and was very active in the life of the church beginning as an acolyte as a young boy. Even in his retirement George became active right away working with the Meals on Wheels program and serving for many years, making friends and helping others. He passed on his love of life and family, and kindness and humility as well as sharp sense of wit and good humor to his children and grandchildren and much to his delight his great grandchildren to whom he was referred to as Dad, Pop-Pop, and Pop-Pop-Pop.
He was preceded in death by his sister Anna, and his brother Fred. Beloved husband of June, loving father of Thomas of Newark, DE, Robert and wife Catherine of Lower Macungie, PA. Pleasant, PA, Robert and wife Kim of Milford, CT, Michele and husband Raul of Newark, DE, William and wife Elana of Maple Shade, NJ, and Katie of Lower Macungie, PA. Great Pop-pop to Aarika, Rivers, Bailey Rose, Liam, Alexandro, Carlos and Aidan
Relatives and friends are invited to attend George's Life Celebration and viewing Thursday Evening Eve 7:00 – 9:00 PM and Friday 9:30 – 10:30 AM at Givnish Funeral Home of Maple Shade, 600 East Main Street. Funeral Service will follow 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 26 S. Forklanding Road Maple Shade, NJ 08052.
Interment, with military honors, will be in the Locustwood Memorial Park, Cherry Hill, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
