Hertha "Oma" Durham's Obituary
Hertha Durham, lovingly known as “Oma or Gypsey” was born on February 14, 1941, in Bad Vilbel, Germany, and passed away on June 3, 2026. She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, generosity, and devotion to her family and friends.
Oma was the daughter of Julchen and Rudolph Eberhardt. She was one of seven siblings and is survived by her beloved brother, Albert Eberhardt. Three years ago, Albert relocated from Orange County, California, to be closer to Hertha, her daughter Annette, and granddaughter Autumn—a reflection of the close bond they shared throughout their lives.
Hertha dedicated 30 years of service to McGuire Air Force Base, where she worked as a cook at the golf course. She was known by her colleagues and friends for her strong work ethic, warm smile, and caring nature. After retirement, she embraced the simple joys that brought her happiness each day.
She is lovingly remembered by her son, Arthur “Art” Durham and (Jenny); her daughter, Annette Banks; and her cherished granddaughter, Autumn, who was the light of her life and brought her immeasurable pride and joy. and loving companion Magnus The 106 pound pitbull.
An avid gardener, Oma found peace and fulfillment among her flowers and plants. She had a remarkable gift for reviving struggling plants, often rescuing those that others had given up on. She spent countless happy hours in her greenhouse tending to her garden. She also loved watching the birds that visited her yard. Most recently, she delighted in watching a robin she named Clotilda lay four eggs, who built a nest on an electrical box attached to her home. At the time of Oma’s passing, Clotilda’s eggs had not yet hatched—a gentle reminder that life continues and new beginnings follow every season.
Oma also enjoyed dining out, indulging in her favorite pastries, and spending time with family and friends. Perhaps she will be remembered most for her generosity and the joy she found in feeding others. Her famous rum cakes became a treasured tradition among family, friends, and neighbors. Each cake was made with care, love, and a desire to bring happiness to those around her.
Oma’s gentle spirit, generous heart, and unwavering love for her family will be deeply missed and forever remembered. Though she is no longer with us, the memories she created, the lives she touched, and the love she shared will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
