James V. Maugeri Jr.'s Obituary
James V. Maugeri, Jr., lovingly known as "Jim," age 79 of Delran, NJ, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2024, surrounded by his family. Born on November 23, 1945, in Lincolnton, NC, Jim was the son of the late James V. Maugeri, Sr., and Alma V. Maugeri (née Harrill).
Jim was the devoted husband of Mary Maugeri (née Bell) and the proud father of Alison Morrell (Vinny) and Jessica Maugeri. He was the beloved “Pop” to his cherished grandsons: Zion, Vinny Jr., and Nico. Jim was the dear brother of Linda Starner (the late Lowell Starner) and will be deeply missed by his sisters-in-law, Barbara Cooper, Susie Stimpfle, Sally Dressler, nieces, nephews and friends.
He moved to Stroudsburg, PA in 1957 and graduated with honors from Stroudsburg High School in 1963. Jim went on to attend Penn State University earning his Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Engineering in 1967 and his Master of Science Degree in Industrial Engineering in 1975. While working on his master’s degree, Jim was drafted and served in the U.S. Army from January 1969 until December of 1970, serving most of that time with a Communications Unit in Italy. In 1981, he received a Master of Business Administration from The Wharton School.
Jim and Mary met when she worked as a secretary at Penn State, and he was a student. They married in 1972 at the University Chapel, moving to Delran, NJ shortly thereafter where they raised their two daughters, Alison and Jessica. Jim worked at The University of Pennsylvania in the Registrar’s Office for 15 years in various capacities including being the Registrar. He then worked for over 25 years at Cigna Insurance as a Financial Strategist/Program Manager and Software Developer.
Outside of work, Jim was a passionate Penn State fan. Mary and he proudly held Penn State season tickets for 35 years. Friday evenings at the Tavern were a special tradition, as Jim loved gathering with his PSU friends before every home game. He also enjoyed watching the Sixers, Phillies, Eagles and Yankees with his family, tending to his yard while wearing his treasured Penn State hat, watching his grandsons play sports, completing crossword puzzles and enjoying spirited games of Parcheesi. His competitive streak earned him the affectionate nickname, “The GOAT.” Known for his intelligence, smile, quick wit/dad jokes, generosity, kindness, crafty handshakes and love of history, Jim was his family’s trusted handyman, financial advisor, storyteller and go-to math tutor. He liked driving fast while listening to his favorite Don Williams soundtrack.
A gathering to honor Jim’s life will be held on Thursday, January 9th, from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM at Givnish of Cinnaminson, 1200 Route 130 North, followed by a service at 11:30 AM.
