James J McCarthy Jr's Obituary
James J. (Jim) McCarthy, a long-time resident of Moorestown, NJ, passed away after a brief illness, surrounded by family, on March 8th, 2023.
Jim was born to the late James and Josephine (Oehler) McCarthy, on August 3, 1936, in Camden, NJ. Jim was born and raised in Moorestown and remained in the town for most of his life. He was the loving husband for 61 years to the late Alice Dougherty. While we are deeply saddened by the loss of Jim, we are comforted in knowing he is reunited with the love of his life.
Jim was devoted to his family, traveling all over the country, and even the world, to support them in their endeavors. He leaves behind his adoring five children, Dennis (Linda) McCarthy, Kathy (Steve) Trachtenberg, Jim (Joyce) McCarthy, Mary (Jim) Stefano, and Aileen (Tucker) Cawley. He was a loving grandfather to his twelve grandchildren, Jessica, Alyssa, Ryan, Laura, Julie, Brianna, Kristin, Rachel, Brigid, Katie, Finn, and Claire. He also had a special place in his heart for his great-grandchildren, Peyton, Avery, Liam, Josie, Nora, Sofia, Sage, Molly, Noah, and Lainey. He was the brother to the late Shirley Wren (Thomas). He will be missed by many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was a member of the Moorestown High School Class of 1954. After graduating, Jim started in Engineering at RCA and worked in this field until his retirement from Alcatel in 1994.
Jim was a devout Catholic and his faith was very important to him. He was baptized at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Moorestown and remained a member of the parish for his entire life.
Jim was proud of his family’s long history in Moorestown and loved to talk about the township, its origins and history. He knew the backstory behind almost every building on Main Street, and was eager to share his knowledge. An hour-long Ghost Tour of Main Street he attended in October 2022 ran closer to two hours after he added his stories along the way. He had a fantastic sense of humor and a gift for telling stories that left listeners in stitches.
He was fascinated by genealogy and loved to talk about his Irish heritage. When Jim and Alice finally submitted to DNA testing, he was laughingly mortified to learn that she was more Irish than he was.
Jim was also an avid golfer, trying out courses all over the country during his travels. He was a long-time member of the Moorestown Field Club, where he tended to the greens as a teenager, and played as a member of the Moorestown High School Golf Team. He was particularly proud of his opportunities to play at Torrey Pines and Pebble Beach, as well as his Hole in One at Indian Spring.
A gathering of friends and family will be held on Saturday, March 18th from 8:30-10:00am at Givnish of Maple Shade, 600 E. Main Street. His memorial mass will follow at 10:30am at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Moorestown. Burial will take place at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Moorestown. Following the burial, a luncheon will take place at Carlucci’s Waterfront in Mt. Laurel. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please consider donations to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Medford, NJ by visiting www.svdpusa.org.
