Joseph Atchison Jr's Obituary
Joseph Atchison, Jr., 82, longtime resident of Merchantville, NJ, passed away on January 8, 2024. Born in Pittsburgh, PA to the late Joseph Atchison Sr. and Janet Atchison (nee Patterson). Devoted husband of nearly 60 years to Donarose Atchison (nee Kozikowski). Dear father to Joseph Atchison III (Mary Katherine), and Dan Atchison (Tammy). Beloved grandfather to Alaina, Haleigh, Katherine, Joseph IV, and Kira. Brother to Joan Hoffmaster, Betty Kowalewski (Bob), Janet Martz (Barry), and the late Agnes Peters. He will be missed by his many nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends.
After growing up in his hometown of Castle Shannon, PA, he left to serve his country in the US Navy and then went on to a long career with Westinghouse Air Brake Company (WABCO) before moving his family to the South Jersey area to join SEPTA. Joe found immense pleasure in his outdoor pursuits, whether casting a line while fishing or tending to his numerous gardens. During his leisure hours, he found solace in the art of restoring and refinishing furniture. His heart swelled with affection for his five grandchildren. Known to his grandkids as “Pap the Fixer”, countless summers were joyfully dedicated to crafting pirate ships, swing sets, and bunny hutches in the backyard for their delight.
A gathering of friends and family will be held on Thursday, January 11th at Givnish of Cinnaminson, 1200 Route 130 North, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm and again the following day, Friday, January 12th from 10:00am to 12:00pm. His funeral service will begin at 12:00pm. Burial and Military Honors will follow at Lakeview Memorial Park in Cinnaminson. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joe’s name may be made to St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital, StJude.org.
