Joseph F. O'Donnell's Obituary
Joseph F O’Donnell passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, November 1, 2025. Born in Philadelphia to the late Joseph and Elizabeth O’Donnell, Joe was a beloved husband, father, brother, teacher, and friend.
A lifelong resident of the Philadelphia area, Joe graduated from Paul VI High School and got his bachelor’s degree at Rutgers University-Camden. After graduating with his master’s degree from San Diego State University, he dedicated most of his career to coaching and teaching at Cherry Hill High School West, where he shared his passion for literature with countless students over 25 years.
As much as he loved the area, he also had an enduring love for travel, and led family and friends on excursions across the world. He always enjoyed an elaborate meal and could often be found preparing one, on holidays or weekdays alike. He had a spiritedness that could brighten up any scene and a lust for all of life, from a quiet morning with coffee and crosswords to a raucous celebration.
Joe was the devoted husband of 37 years to Christina M Kirchner, and the proud father of Kieran O’Donnell (fiancée Samantha) and Colin O’Donnell. He was the loving brother of the late Marianne O’Donnell (Kara Cutino), Patricia Meehan (the late Kevin), Eileen O’Donnell (Bruce Kaplan), and Paul O’Donnell (Suzanne). He is also survived by his mother-in-law Charlotte Kirchner (the late Thomas), his sister-in-law Connie Smith (Dave), and many nieces, nephews, and close friends who will forever cherish his steady spirit, humor, and loyalty.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2025, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by Joe’s Life Celebration Service at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Voorhees Animal Orphanage, www.vaonj.org.
