Joy Anne McGann's Obituary
Joy Anne McGann (née David), 84, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2026. Born in 1942, in Riverside, New Jersey, she was the daughter of Ruth A. Montgomery (née Henry).
Joy was the devoted wife of the late John J. “Jack” McGann, sharing 53 years of marriage until his passing in 2017. She was a loving mother to Sandra “Sandi” Sofroney (Michael Martin) and the late Sean D. McGann. She is also predeceased by her stepbrother, Thomas Montgomery. She was a proud and adoring Mom Mom to Rachel and Olivia Sofroney, both of whom she loved with her whole heart. Joy also deeply loved her brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Joy grew up in Palmyra, New Jersey, where she met her high school sweetheart, Jack. She graduated in 1960 from Palmyra High School where she was a proud cheerleader and made many life-long friends.
A highly skilled and dedicated registered nurse, Joy earned her diploma in nursing from Jefferson in 1963. Her career spanned more than 37 years, serving as an operating room nurse and head nurse, at hospitals including Cooper, Garden State, and the Medical College of Pennsylvania. Her compassionate nature extended far beyond her workplace—she was always the “family nurse,” offering care, comfort, and a listening ear to family and friends in need.
Joy loved spending time down the shore, especially in Sea Isle City, Wildwood Crest, and her favorite vacation spot with Jack, the Windrift in Avalon. Joy enjoyed watching PBS mysteries, sitcoms, and game shows. She could often be found cheering along during The Price Is Right. She never turned down a game of bingo and had a love for margaritas and dark chocolate.
Joy had a delightful sense of humor and an infectious laugh. She and Jack hosted many lively gatherings, filling their home in Somerdale, New Jersey, with family, friends, and laughter. She also loved animals, and adored her family’s dogs, Dasher and Daisy. Touching many lives through her kindness and gentle spirit, Joy will be remembered for her enduring love for her family and friends.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Friday, May 29th, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at Givnish of Cinnaminson, 1200 Route 130 North, Cinnaminson, NJ. A Life Celebration service will begin at 11:00 AM. Urn burial will follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Moorestown, NJ.
