Louise Langerhans' Obituary
Louise Langerhans passed away on April 13, 2023. She was 96 years old. Louise was born on July 13,1926 in the rural town of Tully, NY to Louise Cummings Gilbert and Edward Chauncey Gilbert. Growing up in a close knit dairy farm community, she shared many stories about her raucous adventures with her three sisters, Shirley, Cornelia, and Claire and large extended family.
Louise graduated from Parsons School of Design in New York City in 1948. Employed as an illustrator for McGraw Hill Publishing in New York, she was sent on assignment to Oak Ridge, Tennessee. There she rendered top-secret military designs for the US Army during the Korean War. She bragged that there were 10 men for every woman and she could have a date for every night. Robert, a handsome Chemical Engineer from Missouri, doing biological research, swept her off her feet. They remained happily married for 67 years until his death in 2018.
Robert's successful career with Union Carbide moved them and their two children to diverse locales including Buffalo, NY, Mobile, AL, South Salem, NY, Moorestown, NJ and Madrid, Spain.
Regardless of where she lived, Louise's spunk, wit, timeless style, and mischievous ways earned her many loyal friends. She was known for her lethal tennis serve, her passion for design and antiques and her culinary and entertaining talents. She loved good china, and a table set with sterling and flowers. She had a passion for creating, for color and for finding beauty.
Always the curious traveler, she perfected the fine art of seeing the world. She traveled with an open eye.
She knew how to appreciate a new place by embracing the locals, their customs, their art, and their food.
She was a talented artist who excelled in historical painting techniques, restoration, and craftsmanship.
She earned membership in the prestigious Historical Society of Early American Decoration. She was a Quester, active in the Moorestown Historical Society, and an accomplished watercolor artist. Louise was devoted to her craft of historical decoration and has left a beautiful collection of fine decorated artifacts.
She ate her vegetables, loved too much salt, adored her dogs and enjoyed a Martini on the rocks well into a very old age. Her generous spirit and open heart radiated out to all who knew her.
Most of all she loved her family. We will miss her very much.
She is survived by her children, Gilbert (Ann) Langerhans, Sarah (Mark) Armstrong and her grandchildren, Charles Langerhans, Olivia Langerhans, William Armstrong, Hannah Armstrong, and Caroline Armstrong.
