Maria Pia Vernacchio (nee D’Amico), age 87, a longtime resident of South Philadelphia passed on March 14th surrounded by her family. Born in Monacilioni, Province of Campobasso, Italy. Maria and Lorenzo met in Argentina where they lived many years before coming to the US. Maria was an expert seamstress who owned a bridal shop in Argentina. She continued her profession as a tailor in Philadelphia, bringing smiles to the recipients of her bridal and prom dresses. Beyond this, she was known to always be happy and went out of her way to spread that joy. In particular, she was a fabulous cook! Her family looked forward to Sunday and Holiday meals – on those days, not just anyone made dinner, “Nonna Make” dinner. Her food brought people together with conversation and laughter, filling both stomachs and hearts.
