Mildred Thomasina Williams' Obituary
Mildred Thomasina Williams was born June 22nd, 1930, in Blackville, South Carolina.
Quincy and Sarah Shooks, migrated to New York, and raised Mildred and her four sisters in Jamaica, Queens-in a home that became the safe space for the generations to come.
Her life’s journey from farmland in the South, to new beginnings in the city, prepared Mildred for the many friendships and experiences she would enjoy and endure along the way. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School with honors in typing which aided in her future career as a stenographer with NYC Civil Service in the Department of Mental Health.
On September 15th, 1951, Mildred married her man in uniform, Jasper L. Williams-aka “Sonny”, as he is known to family and friends. Sonny had embarked on a twenty-two-year Air Force career, and the new military wife did her part in service while he was deployed during wartime or alongside him wherever he was stationed. Their travels would take them and their son on a trip around the world, with stops in Ohio, Okinawa, Japan, and North Carolina.
Through the years and many moves, Mildred made lifelong friends and relationships. The Mary’s (Harden & Gaither), in Ohio and her childhood best friend Barbara Clarke deserve special acknowledgement. She was a part of USO committees in the service and participated in cultural exchange programs with Taiwan.
At the end of their military career, the family returned home to New York and set up roots in Laurelton. During the ensuing years, Mildred welcomed and enjoyed her grandchildren in addition to being blessed with great grands. She played an important part in their upbringing and experienced MANY make you laugh; make you cry moments.
Just shy of her 91st birthday, on June 4th, 2021, Mildred went to join our family and friends that had been waiting with open arms. Preceding her in transitioning were Quincy, Sarah, and her sisters-Joyce and Henrietta. Mildred will be remembered lovingly by family and friends; we will mourn for a moment and then celebrate life.
We love you.
