Peter W. Markiewicz, 52, a beloved member of the Riverton, NJ community, peacefully passed away in his home on December 9, 2023. He was the cherished son of William and Mary Markiewicz (nee Stetser) and a beloved brother to Amy Wojeck (Mike). Pete held a special place in his heart for his nieces, Kate and Anna Wojeck, who adored him. His memory will be treasured by his cousin Barbara, his Aunt Rita and a circle of close friends and relatives.
Pete's greatest joy centered around his family. He found immense happiness when everyone spent time together, especially his nieces, playing Mexican Train Dominoes. He loved watching Seinfeld and football, particularly the Army vs. Navy game, as well as reading Weird NJ magazines and going to the movies. Pete loved all living creatures, especially cats.
In his early years, Pete was involved with Cub Scouts and Little League. He ran long-distance track at Palmyra High School. At Burlington County College, Pete studied criminal justice, which aligned with his goals to help others. During his first year of college, he was diagnosed with myotonic dystrophy, which slowly and progressively robbed him of his ability to move and function independently. Yet he faced his many health challenges with a quiet resolve. He carried himself with a quiet dignity and grace, drawing on an inner strength to survive without complaining to protect his family.
For many years, Pete served selflessly as a member of the Palmyra Ambulance Association and sat on its Board of Trustees. Each summer, Pete embraced his community spirit by participating in the Riverton Fourth of July parade proudly riding in the ambulance. He also worked at Murphy and Read Spring Factory and as a sales associate at Boscov’s.
Despite his health challenges, Pete shared unforgettable moments attending Aerosmith, Bruce Springsteen and Jimmy Buffett concerts alongside his sister, Amy. Pete enjoyed family vacations in LBI, Shenandoah National Park and Disney World with his nieces. He cherished eating meals at the Red Lion Inn and Whistlers with his parents and loved watching classic ‘80s television shows such as Emergency! and In the Heat of the Night.
Those fortunate enough to have known Pete will fondly remember him for his subtle wit and dry sense of humor. A kind and caring man with a sweet nature, Pete always thought of others before himself. While his body became broken, especially in more recent years, his heart stayed full and open.
Pete’s family would like to thank the local police departments and Palmyra Ambulance Association for their valiant assistance as well as the doctors, therapists, and aides who helped Pete so he could remain living in his home with his beloved parents.
A gathering to celebrate Pete's life will be held on Friday, December 22nd, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, followed by a heartfelt service at 12:00 pm. At Givnish Funeral Home in Cinnaminson. Located at 1200 Route 130 North, Cinnaminson, NJ, 08077. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Pete’s honor to the Palmyra Ambulance Association, 125 West Broad Street; Palmyra NJ 08065 or the Muscular Dystrophy Association at https://www.mda.org/.
