Dear Lisa, Jessica & Sarah. My sincerest condolences to you and your immediate and extended family and friends on your Dad's passing. Roger was my favorite professor in colleage and graduate school (PENN/IFP 1989/1990). His classes were always engaging, invigorating, cutting-edge, meaningful and important. He never seemed to struggle in distilling complex topics into something easily digestible. We kept in touch through the years and he expanded in my life from professor to mentor and friend. He was always encouraging and helpful. He never said no to a request for advice and always offered - unsolicited - to help me in any way he could. He always showed a deep interest in my work and kept tabs on my progress. He was smart, funny and authentic. May his memory be a blessing. Jonathan Rubin
From colleague and fellow scientist to close family friend and 'American granddad' to our children: That is how our relationship with Professor Roger Raufer evolved since Janosch first met him at a water cooler in the offices of the United Nations at Two UN Plaza some 23 years ago.
Now Roger has died, having lost his long battle against prostate cancer. We mourn the passing of a great teacher, scientist, engineer, mentor, and - to our daughters, Jana and myself - a very close family-friend, generous host, and regular guest.
Roger, you will be forever remembered for so many things: wit, warmth, wisdom, and an open heart and mind. Thank you for your friendship throughout all these years!
What a wonderful friend God brought to me! In the speech invited by me, on the common mountain trip, in the church, in my sadness to my mother’s passing away, Roger opened his mind to care about things happened around him. He provided me the most sincere aid in academic discussion and publication. May God be Roger’s best friend in eternity! With the deepest commemoration and blessings.
I had never thought of writing my story down. Avoiding words felt like avoiding the reality of Professor Raufer’s passing, as if I could still trick myself into believing there would always be someone I could turn to for guidance whenever I was lost. I share the same admiration with so many others: amazed by his extensive knowledge, profound insights, and charming personality. To know him was already a blessing, but to have him supervise my postgraduate thesis for two years was a rare privilege.
Many fragments remain vivid: the gentle music and the aroma of Colombian coffee in his office; the laughter when he failed to recognize me in a Viking horned helmet at the Christmas party; his delight at the portrait I drew of him with a Santa hat; the hug at commencement when I promised we’d meet again in Nanjing, not realizing it was goodbye; and the gourd I gave as a wish of longevity, to which he smiled “Oh, that’s really what I need!” Two years later, he was gone.
Dear Professor Raufer, as long as we remember you, we know the world is still worth living. Your countless virtues will become a treasured legacy, lasting forever. For now, please rest well. Goodbye.

I am saddened to learn of Roger Raufer's passing. As one of Roger's former students at Penn who studied environmental modelling, which was a class Roger taught, I marveled at Roger's ability to integrate atmospheric science with power engineering and economics. Roger was unique in his brilliance at making the subject matter easily understood and engaging. Roger was my mentor while I was pursuing my Master of Science, Energy Management & Policy at University of Pennsylvania. I had lost contact with Roger for the last decade and wondered what he was doing only to be informed of his passing. Roger, you will be greatly missed. To your family, I offer my sincere condolences and wish those who mourn your passing great strength as we all say our final goodbyes. Your name will forever remain in my memory.
My sincere condolences to Roger's family and his many friends, students and colleagues. I was a student of Roger's 35 years ago and we stayed in touch afterwards. He was unfailingly generous with his time and knowledge -- a true and genuine friend and mentor.
