Russell C. String's Obituary
Services will be held for Master Chief Petty Officer, U.S. Navy Retired, who was called to the Staff of the Supreme Commander on Thursday August 11, 2016. Surviving are his son Dennis W., of Flat Rock N.C., Grandson Patrick J. Jr. (Nicole), Cherry Hill, N.J. Three Granddaughters: Letitia Sutton (Don) of Annapolis, Md., Denise Bassett (Lewis) of New York; Dawn String of Flat Rock, N.C., 3 Great Grandsons, 3 Great Granddaughters.
Master Chief String served twenty-six years of active duty and four years inactive duty He retired in January 1970. He was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation, the Navy Good Conduct Medal (w/six stars, the American Theater Medal; Asiatic-Pacific Medal (5 Battle Stars); Navy Occupation Medal (Asia); World War 11 Victory Medal; Philippine Liberation Medal
(2 battle stars); China Service Medal; United Nations Service Medal; Korean Service Medal (4 battle stars); Korean & Philippine Presidential Citations; National Defense Medal. On October 20, 1999 he was presented with the New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal at a ceremony in Vineland, N.J.
In 1968 he was appointed the First Civilian Police Clerk in Maple Shade, N.J. He left the position in 1970.
String was a life member of the Fleet Reserve Association. He joined in Key West, Florida in 1955, and transferred to Branch 57 in 1958. He served as Branch Secretary from 1983 to 1987 and was elected President in 1988. May of 1990 he was appointed President Northeast Region (New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania) by the National Board of Directors and elected to that office in September 1990 for the Association Year 1990-1991. He transferred to 2006 to Br, 21, Fort Collins, Co.
He was appointed a Notary Public in 1983 and served until 1998. Master Chief Petty Officer String was also a Life Member of the Veterans of foreign Wars: the Retired Enlisted Association, the Escort Carrier and Airmen Association. Proceeded in death by his wife, Rita A. (McCabe) and son Patrick J. String, Sr.
Friends and relatives are invited to Russell’s burial service on Friday August 19th at 10:30am at Brigadier Wm. C. Doyle Veteran’s Cemetery in Wrightstown, NJ. Please arrive early and wait at the front entrance waiting lot
