Saeko I. Baigis' Obituary
Saeko I. Baigis, 93, of Moorestown, NJ, passed away peacefully in her home on March 29, 2025, with her family by her side.
Born in Tokyo, Japan, on April 28, 1931, to Shozaburo and Haruno Izumaru, Saeko was the beloved wife of the late Edward Baigis and later the cherished companion of the late Bob Quigley. She was a devoted mother to Emily Baigis (the late Mike Halpin), Cynthia Baigis, Marcy McKinstrie (Bill), and Richard Baigis (Jeanne). Cherished Nana to Jennine Janzer, Dr. Michael Halpin (Megan), Logan McKinstrie (Alex Bendik), Macklin McKinstrie (Alex Even), Keenan Halpin and five great-grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by many friends, as well as extended family members here and in Japan.
Saeko met and married Edward in Japan before moving to the United States 70 years ago. She arrived knowing little English but was determined to build a life for her family. A proud military wife, she was an avid member of the ladies auxiliary club, earned her Red Cross certification and volunteered while in Japan. Saeko had a remarkable work ethic, dedicating many years to retail at Korvette’s as manager of the fabric department, 25 years at Macy’s and later at Boscov’s, where she took great pride in her career. Over the years she had been honored on several occasions; including being named Employee of the Year and continued working until just a few months ago. Saeko also worked at Japanese restaurants, Kawabata and Yanagi, where she was able to share her love for her culture and cuisine with others.
A talented seamstress, Saeko made clothes for her children, custom suits and dresses among other things. She enjoyed sewing, making Japanese dolls, flower arranging, karaoke and attending Japanese dance classes with her granddaughter. She looked forward to weekly poker games and Tuesday gatherings with friends.
Saeko found joy in cooking for her family, she and her granddaughter wrote a cookbook of her signature dishes - which many have enjoyed. She loved shopping, always on the hunt for a good sale, and was an avid Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles fan—keeping up with lineups, batting averages and recent scores. Above all, she treasured time with her family.
A passionate traveler, Saeko frequently visited new places and returned to Japan often, making solo trips even into her 90s. She enjoyed gardening, watching her favorite TV shows like Columbo and Hawaii Five-0. Before her passing she often expressed she lived a great life!
Family and friends are invited to gather in her memory on Saturday, April 5th, at Givnish of Cinnaminson, 1200 Route 130 North, from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM, with a memorial service beginning at 12:00 PM.
