Stephen J. Herz's Obituary
Stephen J. Herz, of Moorestown, NJ, passed away on June 28, 2022 at home surrounded by his loving family after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of Stephanie (nee Brown), proud father of Alexander (Gabriella), Elisa, and Valerie (Matthew Nienas), and loving grandfather of AJ and Dominic. He is survived by his father Joseph Herz and his sisters Christine (Mike Russell) and Jean MacMillan (Ernie) and was predeceased by his mother, Marie.
Stephen was born in 1952, grew up in Haddonfield, NJ and graduated from Haddonfield High School. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from Friends World College and studied Archaeology at Cambridge University. His first career was as an archaelogist working on excavations in Mallorca, Spain for eight years. When he returned to the US, he began his second career as a journalist, starting out at the Asbury Park Press and then the Philadelphia Inquirer. He spent ten years in Florida as a reporter, and then editor, at the National Enquirer, and the remaining years of his editorial career divided between Star magazine, The Globe and Life & Style magazine.
He was a talented photographer and passed on his love of the Lord of the Rings, Star Trek and Svengoolie, as well as his love of the natural world to his children and grandchildren. Nothing would make him happier than the rare occasions that the Phillies would win a game. We will miss him terribly, but we are comforted knowing that all who knew him will keep his memory alive.
Family and friends are invited to a Visitation at St. Joan of Arc church in Marlton, NJ from 10 – 11 AM on Saturday, July 2, followed by the funeral mass at 11. Interment will be private at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Cancer Research Institute (https://give.cancerresearch.org/site/Donation2?2180.donation=form1&df_id=2180&mfc_pref=T) would be appreciated.
