Virginia Jernigan Matthews' Obituary
Virginia Dean Jernigan Matthews, formerly of Norfolk, VA, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2019. She was 87 years old.
Virginia was a 1954 graduate of Elon College. She taught physical education in the Virginia Beach Public Schools for over 20 years. She was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood for over 50 years. She loved sports and was an avid tennis player. She was also an avid gardener.
Virginia was the beloved wife of Alfred Warren Matthews for 65 years. Loving mother of Christopher Matthews and his wife, Nancy, and Julia Matthews. Dear grandmother of Alyson and John Matthews. Sister of Elizabeth Register, Wallace Jernigan, James Jernigan, and Sherrill Jernigan. Virginia was predeceased by her parents, Fletcher and Bettie Jernigan, and her siblings Linwood Jernigan, Betty Lou Maxwell, and Brenda Jernigan. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends who will miss her dearly.
Services will be held at a later date near her childhood home in North Carolina.
