Dr. Walter K. Gordon's Obituary
Walter K. Gordon, 87, passed away peacefully with his family by his side. Loving father to Karyn Gordon and her husband Scott Lunn. Dear husband to the late Lydia Caroline Gordon (nee Fruchtman). He was born January 25, 1930 in Brooklyn, NY to William B. Gordon and Grace A. (Kelly) Gordon. Walter attended P.S. 181 in Brooklyn, Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn, Clark University in Worcester, MA, (B.A.) and the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA (MA., Ph.D.).
Dr. Walter K. Gordon began his career in the Rutgers–Camden English department, then was appointed Dean in July 1974, where he was instrumental in the construction of what later became known as the Walter K. Gordon Theatre at Rutgers Camden.
Before being named provost in 1981, Gordon served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the Camden campus and chief academic officer of its University College, the evening degree-granting program in the liberal arts and professional studies for part-time students. He was a Rutgers educator and administrator for 35 years. He retired as Provost in 1996.
He also had been a ranking member of the department of English and won a Lindback Foundation Award for distinguished teaching.
Dr. Gordon enjoyed attending performances of the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia and dining out with his daughter and son in law.
Services for Dr. Walter K. Gordon will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Rutgers University Camden Theater of the Arts.
