My most memorable picture of Uncle Grat is when I would visit as a young girl and Uncle Grat had a rule of you had to eat everything on your plate. They were always fixing fried squash and I hated squash back then. He would make me sit at the table until I ate it all, but Aunt Annie would help me eat it behind Uncle Grat's back. I have never forgotten that after all these years. He was stern but a fair man. I will miss him.

Grat will be missed by everyone whose life he touched over 90 years! He and Anna had a wonderful life together, married for 65 years. He always kidded about Anna saying "You know my wife...Now what's her name?" This was followed by a loving smile and the chuckle he was known for. I first met Grat when I became a member of the Maple Shade Radio Club. The first meeting I attended was in his basement. A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of visiting with him and chatting about all the good times we all had together in the club: The trips to the pine barrens setting up ham radio stations and talking to people all over the world. We sold meatball and sausage sandwiches at the annual Maple Shade Sidewalk sale. The highlight of club activity was the annual holiday banquet held at GEM caterers in Maple Shade. These and others we reminisced about brought a smile to his face.

Uncle Grat was larger than life to me as a child. I remember him bringing us crab leg when he came to Pittsburgh for Easter. We loved visiting him and Aunt Anna in Maple Shade - he always gave us money for the games at Seaside, spent time with us eating delicious Jersey tomatoes from his garden. If we were lucky, he'd let us ride on his tractor. We will miss him dearly. He was truly one-of-a-kind!

I grew up with a man I looked up to. I meet Grat when I was ten. We were in the Maple Shade Radio Club where I Learned to operate C.W. with Grat and his Son Carl. Later on I waxed his fire engine at the Maple Shade Fire company where I later became a member. All through the years I stayed in touch and was lucky enough to say so long to him recently . I will miss Grat very much. He was a very fine gentleman… a good friend and wonderful mentor to me and others, and always generous with his time and garden vegetables. We kept in touch from time to time after I retired and moved south in 1999, the last time just a few weeks ago.
