Dad
He taught me much in life, we all remember that old Never Give Up t-shirt that he wore to almost every summer party since what seemed like 1987 when he initially had the heart transplant. Amazing how Mom managed to keep that old shirt in one piece and clean. One summer, after my freshman year of College, Dad got me a job at his company doing Data Entry and stuffing envelopes. He was pretty high up in the company and could have pushed for something more glorious, but that was part of the lesson for the summer, to work hard for what you need in life and be your own man and never look for handouts.
That summer we had a big tree that was cut down in the back yard, it would have been expensive to have the stump removed and as everyone who knows Dad knows he would never spend money if he didn’t have to; another lesson for life. He knew just how frustrating and mind numbing the job he got me would be, so he sharpened up the axe and sent me out back to “deal with frustration in a healthy way” and whack away at the stump. He also taught me the value of positive feedback, perseverance, a sense of accomplishment, and chain of command; all summer long as I took out that stump, he would sit on the big swing with his Old Milwaukie tall boy and cheer me on as I removed the entire stump and all the roots.
There is no way that I could be the man that I have become without my Dad, I will miss him so much, but I will always be able to draw upon the lessons. Rest in peace Dad.
Love,
Joe
