John J. Costello's Obituary
John J. Costello passed away peacefully on February 28, 2019, with his family at his side. Born in Philadelphia, John was 87 years old . He was a resident of Marlton and formerly lived in Moorestown, NJ.
Mr. Costello was Professor Emeritus in the Mathematics and Computer Science department at St. Joseph’s University, having retired after 38 years on the faculty. He received his BS in Physics from St. Joseph’s College, his MA in mathematics from the University of Virginia, and studied at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of California-Santa Barbara. He was chairman of the mathematics department at St. Joseph’s from 1973-1979; and President of the Faculty Senate for two years. Mr. Costello was also very active in the study, development, and oversight of the General Education Requirement at St. Joseph’s. Mr. Costello was the co-author of two mathematics texts.
Mr. Costello also worked at the Radio Corp. of America from 1951 until 1963 in various capacities ranging from co-op student to consultant.
He also had been active in BSA Troop 61, Moorestown, NJ from 1971 to 1983 serving as troop treasurer for five years and troop committee for three. He also taught CCD classes at St. Joan of Arc parish in the early sixties and did volunteer work for United Fund and, most recently, the Burlington County Library and the American Heart Association.
Mr. Costello was an avid photographer and received local awards.
Beloved husband of 62 years to Helen M. (née Moore). Loving father of Helen “Tad” E. (Jeffrey Patterson) Costello, John P. Costello, Michael A. (Janis Sullivan) Costello and Bruce D. (Kelly) Costello.
Cherished grandfather to Jill, Caitlin, Colin, Julia “Paige”, Megan, Jack and Ryan. Great grandfather of Dexter.
A gathering of family and friends will be held Wednesday, March 6th, from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Givnish of Marlton 398 East Main Street. His Memorial Service will follow at 11 a.m.
