John "Jack" Kohms' Obituary
John William Kohms, “Jack”, passed away quietly at his home in Riverton, NJ on Sept. 25, 2017 surrounded by family and friends, after earlier enjoying a taste of his favorite drink, a Dark and Stormy. Born in Long Branch, NJ on May 11, 1945 to Jean Ellis Houston (nee Throckmorton) and the late William Peter Kohms, Jack was 72 years old.
He graduated from Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, NJ in 1963 and went on to attend Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ for a time. He then enlisted in the Army Reserves when other men his age were being drafted for the Vietnam War. Later he graduated in 1978 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Language and Literature/Letters from Monmouth College, now Monmouth University.
Jack began his career in manufacturing at Lily-Tulip in Holmdel, NJ before moving on to the companies of Weyerhaeuser, Plymouth, and finally Toll Brothers in Morrisville, PA where he retired as plant manager in 2009.
He always had a book on hand to read, non-fiction being his favorite genre. He amassed a significant library before a wonderful device called a Kindle came into being. From that point on, the Kindle - and his iPad Mini - were never far from him. He was an avid follower of politics, had questionable taste in movies, loved to play tennis and travel, and enjoyed the company of his family above all things.
Jack was the beloved husband of Bernadette (nee Galletti) for 23 years. Son of Jean Houston and stepson of Richard Houston of Howell, NJ. Loving father of Jennifer Kohms of Smithfield, VA; Seth Hartmann and wife Danielle Leisner of Delran, NJ; Blake Hartmann and wife Lynne of Sicklerville, NJ; and Trevor Hartmann. Dearest grandpa of Amelia, Mallory and Mairin VanHoorebeck of Smithfield, VA. Favorite brother and uncle to numerous relatives. And generous friend.
Jack was active in his town of Riverton, belonging to the Riverton Country Club and serving on the town’s Planning Board. So we ask in leu of flowers that memorial donations be made to Riverton Fourth of July Committee, P.O. Box 116, Riverton NJ 08077 with “Jack Kohms” on the memo line.
