Hi Karen,
You and Bruce were more of a family to me than my own. You both saved me from a more severe future; inviting me to your home, offering me advice, appreciating my textile weavings (more so than anyone I've ever known), and graciously taking me on a trip to Asheville, NC at several critical junctures of my life. That one trip was life altering for me.
I had the best time with you visiting the new Barnes Foundation. I will never forget our time together. I loved watching how bright and curious you were as we explored the artworks. You appreciated the art as much as I did. I loved showing you the tidbits I had discovered there. You were just as excited with such discoveries as I was.
I enjoyed watching you and Bruce dote over your children and grandchildren and wished I had had the great fortune of experiencing such love and attention from my own family. I'll never forget you deciding you were going to make a Sponge Bob Square Pants birthday cake (no small feat either) for one of your grandkids. I loved watching Bruce interact with your grandkids as well with such adoration and love.
I'll also never forget how active you both were. Bruce was busy running off to his beloved softball games and aerial yoga classes, and you were busily running off to your exercise classes. You somehow managed to look 20 years younger than your actual age.
You shared your love of folk music with your family, taking them on trips to various venues. I felt they were the luckiest kids on the planet to have had such opportunities. I also loved hearing about your trips around the world, wishing I could have joined you. Bruce is a true scholar, so you must have learned so much from him, taking in all you were experiencing together.
You both have built a most beautiful, bright, adventuresome family together, enduring many hardships along the way. I never heard either of you complain, a trait I am still in need of adopting.
I will always have the fondest memories of you. I'm deeply saddened by your passing. I'm hoping you're enjoying your new existence wherever you are now.
By the way, I saw the photo of you in your obituary in the Courier-Post on 10 Feb 2025 as a young woman. You were so beautiful and looked so bright, spunky, and full of verve. I see why Bruce scooped you up and kept you as his wife for 54 years.
Forever grateful to you and Bruce,
and with much love,
Marjorie Knowles
[P.S. Excuse me for this, but ... If it's at all possible, I'd love to hear how you're doing from 'the other side'.]
