Ruth Coombs Vreeland's Obituary
Ruth Coombs Vreeland passed away Monday, July 18, 2022 in Florida. Ruth, known to her family as “Nan” or “Auntie Ruth” to family friends, was born to Henry Bush and Bertha Anderson of Pemberton, New Jersey on June 20, 1923. After her parent’s untimely passing as a child, she was raised by her aunt and uncle, Amanda and Nathan Coombs of New Jersey.
Having just celebrated her 99th birthday in June, Ruth experienced more in life than many. She worked most of her career at Harders Electric in Palmyra, the only woman in an office full of men, where she kept the books, schedules, inventory, and payroll in order. She experienced the Great Depression and World War II, supporting her husband Arthur “Ott” during his time at war. She spent nearly her entire life in Palmyra but in the last several years resided in St. James City, Florida soaking up the sun, riding in her golf cart, and escaping the harsh winters of New Jersey.
She is survived by her only child Kurt (Jeni) of Florida. She had four grandchildren Courtney (Carrie), Cassidy (Katie), Marigot (Neil), and Zach (Julie). She leaves behind five great granddaughters Blair, Abbey, Quinn, Elliot, and Simone. She is also survived by her dear friend and former daughter-in-law, Patti. She was known to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, taking an active part in their lives well into her 90s. She was fiercely independent, sharp witted, and had an exceptional memory, often remembering moments and details others could not. She never met a stranger and was a good listener and a great friend. Her independence and determination likely was the driving force behind her health and longevity.
She will be fondly remembered by her family, her cozy home filled with Frank Sinatra songs. Ruth never wanted anyone to make a fuss of her or go to any trouble on her behalf. She simply wanted to be remembered with a fun story and a glass of good champagne. She was one of a kind and will be forever missed.
Arrangements will be handled by Givnish Funeral Home, Cinnaminson. Interment will be at 10am Friday, July 29, at Lakeview Memorial Park, Cinnaminson.
